Liebstatt Sunday Gmunden

“A genuine Liebstatt heart helps against every kind of pain — that is why this was also invented in Gmunden, centuries ago.”

In 1641, the Passau bishop who was then responsible for Gmunden established a very special custom for the spa town on Lake Traun. He instructed the town priest to invite the poor of the city to a joint meal on the fourth Sunday of Lent and to serve them himself. Historically speaking, it was the confirmation of the so-called “Corpus Christi Brotherhood.” Members of this brotherhood were wealthy and influential citizens who paid their love to the poor in this way. This gave Mid-Lent Sunday its beautiful name. This custom has been preserved in a modified form to this day.

We are open for you on Liebstatt Sunday from 08:00-18:00 and are looking forward to your visit!
